How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Here’s how it works: Hair grows in three distinct phases: anagen (growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Because each hair follicle is in a different stage of the cycle at any given time, multiple treatments are necessary to effectively target hairs during the anagen phase, when laser treatment is most effective. For the laser to effectively target the follicle, the hair must contain pigment, meaning darker hair generally responds best to treatment

Sessions are typically quick, and mild redness and warmth afterward are normal. Most clients will see this will see this resolve within a few hours to a day.

Many clients starting noticing a difference with 4-6 treatments and begin seeing smooth skin after 8-10 treatments.

Every treatment plan begins with a complimentary consultation, where we’ll discuss your goals, estimated number of sessions, pre and post treatment care instructions, and whether you’d like to begin treatment the same day.

What to Expect Between Sessions

After each treatment, the targeted hairs will appear to continue growing before they shed. This is a normal part of the process and usually occurs within one to three weeks. Sessions will need be spaced out 4-6 weeks for facial areas and 6-8 weeks apart for the body. Between sessions, avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, or depilatory creams on the treated area. Shaving is fine.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Book

Being upfront matters more than a hard sell. Laser hair removal works best on darker hair colors, which contain more pigment for the laser to target. The Cutera Excel HR is designed for a wide range of skin tones and hair types. This includes darker skin tones and we customize settings for every client.

Lighter hair colors, including blonde, red, and grey, contain less pigment. Results are still possible but may require more sessions or come with different expectations. Laser hair removal is not performed over tattooed skin, and it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Not sure whether you’re a good candidate? That’s exactly what the free consultation is for.

What to Expect Between Sessions

The treated hairs will appear to keep growing before shedding. This is normal and usually occurs within 1-3 weeks.

You may shave the area but will want to avoid any waxing, tweezing, threading, or depilatory creams between treatments.

Contact your medical provider if you experience any blistering, severe swelling, persistent pain, excessive skin irritation lasting more than several days, or any signs of infection.

The Laser Behind Your Results

Medical-grade equipment makes the difference between results and frustration. Here is what we use at Old Flame Laser.

Cutera Excel HR

The Cutera Excel HR combines two proven wavelengths: 755nm Alexandrite and 1064nm Nd:YAG. This allows treatment to be customized for a wide range of skin tones and hair types. Its built-in sapphire contact cooling system helps protect the skin and improve comfort throughout treatment.

Zimmer Cryo 6

The Zimmer Cryo 6 delivers a steady stream of chilled air before, during, and after each treatment to reduce discomfort, calm redness and swelling, and protect the skin from excess heat. Because it works without direct contact, it doesn’t interfere with the laser, just a safer, more comfortable experience with less downtime.

Questions We Hear All the Time

Straight answers, no filler. If you don’t see your question here, bring it to your free consultation.

Hair grows in cycles, so multiple sessions are needed to target each follicle during its active growth phase. Most clients achieve optimal results in 4 to 6 sessions. Sessions need to be spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart for facial areas, and 6 to 8 weeks apart for the body. We’ll give you a realistic estimate during your consultation based on your treatment area and hair type.

Most clients describe it as a mild snapping sensation with some warmth, similar to a rubber band against the skin. The Cutera Excel HR has a built-in cooling device at the laser tip that helps ease discomfort throughout each session. Most people find it far more manageable than they expected.

The Cutera Excel HR is designed to safely treat a wide range of skin tones, including darker skin. For hair, the laser targets pigment in the follicle, which means darker hair responds best. Lighter hair colors like blonde, red, and grey contain less pigment and may require more sessions or come with different expectations. We’ll walk you through what to expect for your specific type during your consultation.

Laser hair removal provides long-term hair reduction, not permanent removal. Most clients see a 70 to 90 percent reduction in hair growth. As hormones change over time, some hair may return. Occasional maintenance sessions once or twice a year can keep results where you want them.

Laser hair removal is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. We recommend waiting until after this period. We’re happy to help you plan ahead for when the timing is right.

No. Because the laser targets pigment in the hair follicle, it can also absorb tattoo ink, which can cause burning or blistering and may distort the tattoo. We can treat close to a tattoo but not directly over it.

Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment. Avoid waxing, tweezing, threading, or depilatory creams between sessions. These remove the follicle the laser needs to target. Avoid excessive sun exposure or tanning in the weeks before treatment, and let us know about any changes to your medications or health.
